This
tour is without a shadow of a
doubt one of the nicest and interesting cycle trips, that you may perhaps
wish to undertake.
In summer the daily weather is mild, warm and mostly
dry with the odd thunderstorm now and again. Most of the roads we used
from Detroit to Winnipeg had either ample to good shoulders or the level
of traffic was so sparse, that it did not really matter anyhow. The folks
in Michigan and Wisconsin proved to be rather cyclist friendly, likewise
in Minnesota and Manitoba.
Leaving the busy city limits of Detroit, then its lush
green countryside all the way to Lake Michigan, where you can enjoy the
tremendous views over this vast lake from the observation deck of the
S.S.Badger carferry on the 4 hour crossing to Wisconsin. Continuing north,
we'll be passing many Amish People communities, most of these selling
home baked delights. Reaching the deep blue colored Lake Superior, we'll
now be crossing over the mighty Bong Bridge into Duluth, Minnesota.
The route now starts becoming rather barren as we make
our way towards the border into the Canadian province of Manitoba. Our
end destination is merely a day or two away now. Underway, we'll pass
through the Mennonite village of Steinbach. Staying an extra night in
the lovely little campground here is well worth it before tackling the
last section into Winnipeg on this 1362 mile long spectacular cycling
tour.
